Modelling Of Upper Roof

Modelling Of Upper Roof

Upper Roof plan layout and loading plan are shown below. We are going to use following features to model the upper roof floor.

→ Overlay

→ Slab edge & slab piece

→ Slab opening

→ Arbitrary & rectangular column

→ Shear wall & analytical wall

→ Plan view cutout (for shear wall)

→ Shear wall opening

→ Area loading

  • Go to Upper Roof → Overlay

  • Select Xref drawing as Upper Roof Linked Drawing

  • Click OK

Zoom in and start drawing. Since upper roof drawing is the top floor plan there is no column or shear wall above. We will draw slab, beam, column below and shear wall below objects.

Drawing Slab

  • Click + next to Upper Roof item on tree view

  • Go to Slab → Slab Edge Button

  • Start to draw slab

You can view slab edge drawing by right clicking on spreadsheet and selecting it in AutoCAD as shown below.

  • Enter the properties of slab such as thickness or clear cover.

You can edit material from clicking material cell above if it is desired to be different from default slab material.

Since there is no association between slabs you should draw them all by using slab edge command. So just hit space to repeat last command which is slab edge and draw. Enter slab edge properties as shown above.

  • Click update button to update changes on 3D view and cloud

To refresh the 3D view;

  • Use the "Refresh Parametric Model" button

If reference drawings are floor plans which means it shows columns/shear walls above, you must overlay the drawing of one lower floor to draw columns and shear wall which are carrying the slab.

To draw shear walls and columns below;

  • Go to Upper Roof → Overlay

  • Select Xref drawing of Roof linked drawing

  • Unselect Upper Roof linked drawing

  • Click OK

Now you see the shear walls and columns below.

Drawing Columns

There is 2 columns in upper roof.

Since the column shown on the right is rectangle shaped but rotated you must draw it with arbitrary column command as shown below.

  • Go to Upper Roof → Columns

  • Click arbitrary column and draw the column shown

  • Click rectangular column and draw the other column

Drawing Shear Walls

  • Go to Upper Roof → Shear Walls

  • Click Shear Wall to start drawing

You can select shear wall drawing by right clicking on spreadsheet and selecting it in AutoCAD.

You must draw analytical walls of shear walls for finite element analysis and for exporting floor models to CSI SAFE correctly.

To draw analytical walls;

  • Spreadsheet Data → Analytical Walls

  • Click Analytical wall to draw

You must draw a straight line from mid point of one edge to mid point of other edge of shear wall. If shear wall is not straight you must draw analytical walls for each directions of shear wall parts.

Corner intersection of two analytical walls linked to one shear wall must be as shown on the right.

  • Enter thickness of each analytical wall

  • Enter offset value of reference line of analytical wall (if necessary)

If an analytical wall intersects another from middle, break point is automatically created in the intersection point. But you can also create break point to define different thickness and offset to analytical wall parts.

  • Go to analytical wall on spreadsheet

  • Click No Break Pts cell

  • Draw line starting from start point of analytical wall to intersection point

  • Continue drawing to the end point of analytical wall

  • Hit ESC

You can edit thickness or refline offset of analytical wall parts which is divided by break points with different values by entering “,” between values as shown above.

We will create an opening on shear wall for door as shown below.

  • Go to analytical wall which the opening will be drawn

  • Click Show in Elevation View

  • Click Wall Opening → Select Rectangle Shape

You must consider the point locations on plan and elevation view.

  • Draw a rectangular opening with dimensions above.

  • Click Show Story to go back to plan view.

There is a closed polygon shaped shear wall in floor plan, we must create a plan cut-out for the closed polygon shaped shear wall.

  • Spreadsheet → Shear Walls

  • Click Shear Wall

  • Draw outer polygon of shear wall

  • Click Plan View Cutout

  • Draw inner polygon of shearwall

  • Hit ESC after drawing

3D view of shear walls must be as in below after updated to cloud.

Drawing Load Geometry

  • Go to loads

  • Click Area

  • Draw loading area the same as slab edge polygons

  • Select load case according to the loading schedule

Load cases are the loads that we defined in Loading page.

You can copy the load area and assign different load case.

  • Right click on the load in the spreadsheet

  • Click Duplicate

  • Select load case for duplicated area

Each slab edge area must be loaded with superimposed dead load and live load.

Upper roof modelling is completed. 3D of upper roof is shown below.
