Superstructure Attachment Construction [EX1-STG]
Barriers in steel I-girder bridges are typically constructed after the deck pouring stages are completed. They are designed to provide a physical barrier between the roadway and any areas where vehicles or pedestrians should not be allowed.
Bridge owners usually prefer to be conservative and avoid using barrier stiffness in finite element analysis. To achieve this in OpenBrIM, the user can input a self-weight factor of 1 and select "No" for stiffness. However, this approach will not suffice if the user intends to apply wind loads to the structure, as OpenBrIM requires finite element representation of wind-exposed objects. In such cases, the user should select "Yes" for stiffness and assign materials with low E to decrease the barrier's stiffness.
The construction process for barriers typically involves the following steps:
Formwork installation: Similar to deck pouring stages, formwork is used to shape and support the concrete barrier during the construction process. The formwork should be designed to match the desired shape and size of the barrier.
Reinforcement installation: Steel reinforcement bars, also known as rebar, are then installed into the formwork to add strength to the barrier. The number and spacing of the rebar will depend on the design requirements.
Concrete pouring: Once the formwork and rebar are in place, concrete is poured into the formwork to fill the space and create the barrier. The concrete should be carefully placed and compacted to minimize voids and ensure uniformity.
Curing: After the concrete is poured, it is left to cure and harden. This can take several days depending on the weather conditions and the specific type of concrete used.
Finishing: Once the concrete has cured, the formwork is removed and any rough spots or imperfections in the surface are smoothed out. If necessary, the barrier may also be painted or coated with a protective layer to help prevent damage from weather and other environmental factors.
