Seismic base shear is calculated by AEC | BOLT Building Design Suite in Seismic Parameters section.
To be able to run the calculation, user must import following templates from Design Templates as described in mentioned section;
“SeismicBaseShear” template as shown in Figure 1
Figure 1
There are multiple “SeismicBaseShear” templates available in AEC|BOLT BIM Cloud library. Each template calculates the seismic base shear according to the building code at the end of the template name.
“SeismicDesignCategoryFromX” template as shown in Figure 2
Figure 2
There are multiple “SeismicDesignCategoryFromX” templates available in AEC|BOLT BIM Cloud library for the determination of the seismic design category of the building. User must select the seismic design category determination template in accordance with the building code to be applied.
Imported templates must be assigned as “Seismic Design Code” and “Seismic Design Category” criteria objects from Design Criteria section as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3
After the necessary templates are setted user must edit “Seismic Parameters” spreadsheet.
AEC | BOLT Building Design Suite allows user to import most of the property values from the library. User can also enter the property values manually.
Figure 3
Properties which must be setted by the user;
→ Ground Story
→ Site Class
→ Lateral Force-Resisting System
→ Occupancy Category
Properties which can be imported or entered manually by the user;
→ 0.2 Sec Spectral Accel, SS
→ 1 Sec Spectral Accel, S1
→ Long Term Period, Tl
→ Response Modification Factor, R
→ Overstrength Factor, Omega
→ Deflection Amplification, Cd
Click “Import Seismic Coefficients” to import regional Ss, S1 and Tl values as shown in Figure 4
Select the region → click “import”
Figure 4
Click “Import Seismic Factors” to import R, Omega and Cd values as shown in Figure 5
Go to the applied building code database → Select the structure system → Select resisting system
Click “import”
Figure 5
User can see the values of seismic design factors on the right of the pop up window.
→ Seismic Design Category is automatically determined when occupancy category, site class, Ss, and S1 values are being setted.
→ Seismic Force-Resisting System property is a read-only property to show the resisting system of the building.
Click “Show” to see the detailed report as illustrated in Figure 6.

Detailed Report contains the following titles;
→ Building Height Limitation
→ Seismic Ground Motion Parameters
→ Seismic Design Parameters
→ Period Of Vibration
→ Seismic Weight
→ Base Shear
→ Vertical Distribution Ff Force
→ Diagram of Vertical Distribution Of Force
→ Shear Diagram
