OpenBrIM can generate custom sections for analysis and design.

To create a section there should be at least one material defined in the project.:


Creating Custom Sections

There are multiple ways of creating custom sections:

1. From Data/FEA/Properties/Sections tab to create new section then from options () menu click edit section.

2. Click icon on top left corner then go into “Assets” menu. Under the Sections tab click + icon.

Polygon:

  • To add a polygon, select Polygon icon and choose material from the drop down list. In case the material is not included from the drop down list, the user can define a new material by selecting the + icon behind the drop down list or import material from library by selecting the cloud icon behind the Shapes (+) icon.

  • Draw the custom section and edit the section point coordinates to ensure the exact dimension of the section. To edit the section coordinates, select the three-dotted icon () on the upper right side of the section and select Points Spreadsheet.

Template:

  • AISC shapes and other predefined shapes available can also be added as custom section. Select Template icon then choose the section from the database and specify the material by choosing from the material drop down list or import a material from library by selecting the cloud () icon beside the material drop down list.

Rebar:

  • Rebar profiles imported or created in Assets can be imported in Sections. If rebar profiles are not set in Assets, the user can import () rebar profiles from library.

Tendon

  • Prestress tendons can also be added for custom prestressed sections.

Importing Sections From Database

  • To import a section, user must navigate to Data/FEA/Properties/Sections tab and click on “⋮” icon and select “Import Section” option.

  • Navigate through “Add Shape” page and import desired section from OpenBrIM database.

  • Same exact process with custom sections can be followed to edit imported sections.
