Floor plan layout and loading plan of roof are shown below. We are going to use following features while modeling on this floor.
→ Overlay
→ Slab edge & slab piece
→ Slab opening
→ Copy from & Select Graphically.
→ Arbitrary & rectangular column
→ Shear wall & analytical wall
→ Plan view cutout (for shear wall)
→ Shear wall opening
→ Beam & analytical beam
→ Area loading
→ Line loading
You already overlayed the reference drawing of roof to draw column&shear wall below for upper roof but if you do not see the reference drawing;
Go to Roof Floor → Click Overlay
Select Xref drawing as Roof Linked Drawing
Click OK
Now you see roof floor plan.
Drawing Slab
Go to Slabs
Click Slab Edge
Draw 2 slab edges
Slab thickness is 8” at roof but we will draw slab pieces to assign different thickness to slab areas in slab edge as shown below.
Click Slab Piece
Draw slab pieces that are in slab edge
You can select slab pieces by right clicking and selecting in AutoCAD as shown above.
Enter the thickness of slab piece
Enter the clear cover values of slab piece
Do not forget to click update button to see changes on 3D view.
Drawing Openings
Go to Openings → Select Rectangular/Arbitrary
Draw openings
You must draw rotated rectangular openings by using arbitrary opening command as shown below.
You can use rectangular opening command only if opening dimensions are in x-y direction as shown below.
Drawing Columns
Arbitrary column that we draw on the upper roof continues on the roof. We can re-draw the column again or copy from upper roof. To copy the column from upper roof;
Go to Roof floor → Copy From
Select columns object to copy
Select Upper Roof as source story
Click Select Graphically
Select column to copy
Hit Enter
You can copy all objects that are selected from source story by clicking Copy All as shown above or if only some objects are the same you can select graphically from source story by clicking Select Graphically.
Objects to be copied from source story will be overlayed on drawing space.
You can select multiple objects before hitting enter.
Draw remaining column belows using the commands shown on the right.
Drawing Shear Walls
Shear walls above continue below. We can copy them from upper roof.
Go to Roof Floor → Copy From
Select Shear walls object to copy
Select Upper Roof as source story
Click Copy All
Update the project
Shear wall opening size is not the same, we must draw shear wall opening.
Go to analytical wall which the opening will be drawn
Click Show in Elevation View
Click Wall Opening → Select Rectangle Shape
Draw the opening with the following size
Drawing Beams
There are two link beams between the shear walls in the roof plan.
Go to Beams
Click Draw Beam
Draw the beam polygon from shear wall face to shear wall face
Enter the depth of the beam
Select material of the beam
Draw each beam on the plan following the instructions above.
You must draw analytical beams of each beam object for finite model of the building.
Go to Analytical Lines
Click Draw Analytical Beam
Joint locations of the analytical walls will be visible when the Draw Analytical Beam command is active.
Draw center line of the beam from joint to joint.
You can start or end the line out of the beam polygon as long as middle point is inside the polygon borders.
When the analytical lines of beams or shear walls intersect, AEC | BOLT Building Design Suite creates break point joint on the intersection point.
Drawing Load Geometry
Go to Loads
Click Area
Draw slab edge polygon
Select superimposed dead load value according to the loading schedule as load case
Right click on the load in the spreadsheet
Click Duplicate
Select the live load value according to the loading schedule as load case of clone load are
Right click on the load in the spreadsheet
Click Duplicate again
Select type as line load
Select facade value according to the loading schedule as load case
Repeat the instruction for the other slab edge.
Roof modelling is completed. 3D view of project is shown below.
